How to Start Quilting: A Guide to Beginning Quilting Supplies
If you're ready to dive into the wonderful world of quilting but not sure how to start quilting, we've got you covered! When you're looking for your list of beginning quilting supplies, there are a few essentials you'll need to get started on your quilting journey. From fabric and thread to cutting tools and sewing machines, having the right supplies can make all the difference in creating beautiful quilts that you'll cherish for years to come. So, let's explore what you need to start quilting and unleash your creativity!

Fabric
When it comes to quilting, one cannot overlook the importance of the fabric. Quilting Cotton, the star of the show, is typically crafted from 100% cotton. While other fabric types can be used, sticking to woven cotton is recommended for beginners.
Let's talk about the cost. Fabrics are like a treasure trove just waiting to be explored. The abundance of choices can make it oh-so tempting to hoard them all! Quality comes with a price, but remember, a splurge on top-notch fabric can lead to a stellar quilt.
Now, how do we balance the love for fabric with our wallet's well-being? Fear not! There are ways to be savvy. Whether it's hunting for deals or investing in fabrics that align with your values, there are options to ensure your quilting journey is as delightful as the end product.
Shop Second Hand
Before you get lost in a rabbit hole of window shopping gorgeous quilting fabric, check in with some friends or family. If you know someone who quilts, chances are they have some fabric in their stash that they probably won’t use. Ask if they’re willing to part with it or sell it to you at a discounted price.
Alternatively, if you don’t know any quilters check out FeelGood Fibers. This is a marketplace for sewists to buy and sell second-hand (aka pre-loved) fabric to save some money and also lessen the impact we have on the planet.
Shop Small
At North Star Quilt Shop, we believe in the magic of shopping small and supporting independent fabric stores like ours. By choosing to shop with us, you are not only investing in high-quality fabrics and unique notions but also in a community of passionate creators.

Don’t Shop
Check your closets for fabric for your first quilting project! If you have an old cotton sheet, pillowcase, shirt, or dress that you're willing to cut up, you can make it into a quilt without spending a dime. Avoid fabrics that stretch or fray easily, like knits or linen blends. Get creative and reuse what you already have to start quilting today!

Measuring Tools
When it comes to quilting, precision is absolutely essential for achieving those perfect intersections. It's crucial to begin with fabric pieces that are not only straight but also perfectly squared using precise measuring tools and a trusty straightedge. If quilting is a newfound passion, consider splurging on high-quality quilting rulers to elevate your craft. However, if you're still testing the waters and not quite ready to make a financial commitment, there are plenty of other budget-friendly alternatives to explore.
Quilting Ruler
To measure your fabric as accurately and quickly as possible you’ll need a quilting ruler. This is a ruler, usually made of clear plastic, that displays increments in a grid form so that you can measure both the length and width of the piece of fabric while using its sturdy straight edge as a guide for a rotary cutter. They are available in various sizes, shapes, and price ranges. We recommend starting with something that is at least 6½ inches wide and 20” long.
Ruler & Straightedge
If you have a ruler or tape measure lying around and anything that can help you make a straight line between two dots then no need to buy a quilting ruler just yet. The important thing is that you’re able to measure out and mark your fabric to cut it into smaller pieces.

Cutting Tools
Using kitchen or craft scissors is convenient, no doubt about it, but investing in proper cutting tools is highly recommended for anyone serious about crafting. While nice scissors can definitely get the job done when it comes to cutting fabric and thread, a rotary cutter emerges as the true champion for precise fabric cutting.
Rotary Cutter & Mat
A rotary cutter helps you cut fabric with accuracy and ease. Paired with a quilting ruler and you have a dream team that can save you a lot of time. Rotary cutters are available in a range of sizes and price points but generally, all do the same thing. We recommend starting with a 45mm size blade.
If you’re going to invest in a rotary cutter you’ll need to protect the surface you cut on. A cutting mat is the best option for this but some cardboard can work in a pinch. Cutting mats also come in many sizes so choose what’s best for the space you’ll be working in.
Markers
A hera marker is a small hand tool with a thin, slightly sharp edge that is used to temporarily crease your fabric. It is not sharp enough to cut through fabric, but it is thin enough to make a crisp indent. This is great for marking fabric when you need a guideline to sew on.
While we highly recommend hera markers, using the dull side of a butter knife can give you the same outcome and will most likely cost you nothing.

Sewing Tools
After cutting fabric, the next step is piecing the fabric back together using a sewing machine or a hand needle, based on your preference for piecing - whether it's by machine or hand. Make sure to have thread, an iron, and pins on hand for both techniques to bring your quilt blocks to life.
Sewing Machine
If you are new to sewing, start by choosing a machine that can perform a straight stitch. If you can, it’s a great idea to borrow or rent a sewing machine first to gauge your interest in sewing before committing to a purchase.
Hand Needle
To sew by hand, you need a needle and thread. Beginners should get a mixed pack of needles to find the right type and size. You can also use a thimble to protect your fingertips. Thimbles come in various designs, from full finger coverage to simple leather dots for your finger pads. Choose one that suits your needs and preferences.

Basting Tools
A quilt is made up of three layers: the top fabric, the soft batting in the middle for warmth, and the backing fabric. Basting is the technique used to temporarily hold these layers together before stitching. Quilters can choose from various basting methods, each with its unique advantages and disadvantages, but all serve the common purpose of securing the layers in place for quilting.
Batting
When quilting, it's essential to use batting to provide warmth and loft to your quilt. Popular options include cotton, polyester, blends, wool, and bamboo. For a unique touch, consider repurposing an old blanket or using cotton/linen fabric as batting. Remember to purchase batting in the appropriate size – typically 8 to 10 inches larger than your quilt top – to ensure a cozy finish to your project.
Safety Pins
Safety pins are a wonderful tool for basting quilts, especially the special bent ones that are designed for easier handling. When pinning, make sure to space them out evenly, typically about 4-5 inches apart. The best part is, these pins are reusable, saving you time and money in the long run. Although the basting process can be time-consuming and often done on the floor, it's important to consider your comfort and space to make the task more enjoyable.
Spray
Basting spray, such as Odif's 505 Spray and Fix, is a temporary adhesive spray often used in quilting for its convenience. This product offers a quicker and simpler alternative to traditional pin basting methods. Although some may consider it costly, resourceful quilters opt for DIY versions to both cut costs and reduce their ecological footprint, making it a versatile option for various quilting needs.
Thread
To thread baste, select a vibrant and contrasting thread color from your quilting thread. Thicker options such as pearl cotton or embroidery floss are ideal, although all-purpose thread can also be used. While it requires time similar to pin basting, this method is more convenient when working on a flat surface like a table. Ensure you have a hand needle ready for the process.

Quilting Tools
When quilting, sewing the three layers together is a crucial step that allows your creativity to shine through. You have the exciting choice between machine quilting or hand quilting, each offering its own unique charm.
Whether you find joy in the precision of machine quilting or the handmade touch of hand quilting, the end result is sure to be a masterpiece that reflects your personal style. Alternatively, you can always entrust the quilting process to a skilled professional if you prefer.
Sewing Machine
Look for a way to borrow or rent a sewing machine if you're not ready to buy one. If you plan to quilt long-term, find a machine for both piecing and quilting. Local sewing machine dealers can recommend a domestic machine based on your needs.
Use a walking foot attachment for machine quilting to prevent fabric bunching. When shopping online, ensure the machine has this feature. Use either all-purpose thread or thread made for machine quilting for best results.
Hand Needle
Hand quilting, our absolute favorite aspect of quilting projects, involves a delightful process using just a needle and thread. There is a wide array of needle choices to explore, so beginning with a mixed pack can help you discover the perfect match for your style.
Experiment with different thread weights to add a unique touch to your hand quilting work. We love size 8 pearl cotton, although you can freely use any type of thread you like.
